Ten years sentence for Tibetan writer Mr. Dolma Kyab and his book

Name: Dolma Kyab, pen name Lobsang kalsang Gyaltso

Profession: Teacher in Middle School at Lhasa, Tibet.

D.O.B: 1976 in Qinghai, Amdo Tibet.

Date of arrest: 9th March 2005 at the age of 29.

Sentence: 10 years' imprisonment.

Expires: 14th November 2015

Details of arrest: As he mentioned in his petition to UNO, the following reasons are the main cause of his imprisonment;

1. For his Chinese commentary manuscript titled "The Restless Himalaya-Sao Dong de Ximalayashan" to India, which was ready to be published. But got caught by the Chinese authority and resulted his imprisonment. It is a collection of comments with 57 chapters on different topics and it is mainly about; Democracy, Sovereignty and about the issues of Tibet.

2. He submitted an application to the authority of Tibetan Autonomous Region; appeal them to take compulsive steps to protect the environment of Tibet at such a crucial moment and also appealed them to improve the sanitation of Tibetan women in Tibet. But they (Chinese Authority) took it as an act of organizing pro-Independence activity.

3. He planned to write a geographical book and before starting of writing, they (Chinese Authority) unreasonably recognized it as an act of providing information to the outsiders.

Details of trail: He was summoned for the first time in court (The People's Intermediate Court, Lhasa city) on 16th Sep, 2005 according to the Chinese written law, his case is should be charged with three to four years imprisonment, and however he was sentenced to 10 years. His family appealed for retrial because they found the imposed sentence was unfair, but nothing could be changed since his case is related to political background. So it was reconfirmed ten years imprisonment for Mr. Dolma Kyab on 30th November, 2005.

Place of Detention: In the Fourth Section of Chinese Security Department, Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region.

Duration of Detention: From 9th March, 2005 - 30th November, 2005.

Place of Imprisonment: Chushul (Ch:Qushui) county prison(New jail) in Nyethang under Lhasa Municipality. At first, the Chushul prison authority refused to take him as he was suffering from Tuberculosis (T.B) and they took him in only after the Losar (Tibetan New Year), when he was cured.

Brief Bio data of Mr. Dolma Kyab; Mr. Dolma Kyab, a well-educated and determined Tibetan youth was born in 1976 at Arig (known as Qilain County) in Amdo region of Eastern Tibet to Mr.Khetsun and Mrs. Dolma.

It was learnt that Mr.Dolma Kyab joined the Arig Village Primary School in 1984 and later joined the People's Middle School at Dola Country and completed his studies I around 1995. Thereafter, as per some of his close acquaintances, he served as a teacher in one of the People's Middle School of Dola Country after completing his teacher's training course from Qunghai. And later he went to Beijing University for further studies.

He later came to India in 2003 and was sent to Tibetan Transit School in Dharamsla, to learn English and Hindi. He however returned back to Tibet in May 2004.

Recently, we have learnt about the unfortunate arrest of Mr.Dolma Kyab by the Chinese authorities on March 9, 2005 and subsequent sentencing of him for ten years imprisonment on November 30, 2005 on alleged charges of attempting to split the country.

He is at present reportedly held in Chushul ( Ch:Qushui) county prison in Nyethang under Lhasa Municipality.
